Hand-made papier-machè mask from the Italian "Commedia dell'arte"
Dim. (cm): 17x20x9
As we are used to see him, Arlecchino is a refined version - made by comedy writer Carlo Goldoni - of the original one. The latter kind is an immigrant who had come from Bergamo and became a servant once arrived in the Capital of Serenissima Republic: his character is ingenuous, silly, vulgar, lazy, unruly and extremely hungry. The origins of this mask are ancient: very probably it is the evolution of the devil-jesters, said Hellequins (Alichino is found in Dante's Commedia). Arlecchino as we know it is also known as the second Zanni, the silly one. In century XVIII also ladies weared the female version: Arlecchina.

Bauta
Hand-made papier-machè mask from the Italian "Commedia dell'arte"
Dim. (cm): 15x20x14
This mask appeared at first in century XVII, as a common disguise for all social classes. Because of this egalitarian aspect, Bauta became the face of the Venetian Carnival. The Bauta is quite ghostlike and with the centuries the fashion was to wear it with a black tricorno (the 3-pointed typical venetian hat). This very Venetian mask was beared by strangers too, and was considered an ideal disguise by kings and princes who could move freely into the city without being recognized. Fame of the Bauta went on along the Serenissima Republic: with the French and Austrian rules it started to disappear, considered as a reactionary symbol

This character is very interesting because under the violence of his words, he conceals a painful view of the life. Along the years Pulcinella lost his mustaches and beard but got a big mole; his body changed too: a hunchback and a big belly made the final traits of Pulcinella as we are used to imagine him. It was mostly a street mask and his captivation drew the attention of famous artists, from Tiepolo to Goethe. A variant of Pulcinella is the famous french mask: Pierrot.

Zanni
Hand-made papier-machè mask from the Italian "Commedia dell'arte"
Dim. (cm): 18x20x24
Zanni is the former mask of almost every male character in Comedy of Art plays: its name comes from Giovanni (also said Zan, Zane, Zuane), a typical name of servants whose forefathers immigrated in Venice search for work from the valleys around Bergamo. Opposed to the Magnifici (the masters), the role of the Zanni is very changeable: silly, simple-minded, vulgar, once inside the city environment Zanni becomes sly, cunning, meddling, cheeky. Many times he remains poor, constantly hungry. Pulcinella, Arlecchino, Brighella, Coviello, Francatrippe, Zan Fitata, Zan Piastrela, Zan Ganassa are masks that come from the former Zanni.
